## Whose dream is she playing?

Aoi’s days follow the rhythm of violin practice and her mother’s expectations. At home, at school and on the bus, that pressure travels with her. RUBATO follows the distance growing between them, and the inherited dream underneath it.

The film is about love expressed through expectation, and the difficulty of hearing what a child cannot say. A small pause, a glance or a familiar sound carries the tension. The story asks the viewer to listen as carefully as the characters struggle to.

## A world built around a rhythm

The kitchen gives the film’s central tension a physical shape. Aoi sits close to us, while the metronome occupies the foreground and the rest of the household continues behind her. These objects and distances tell us something before anyone explains it.

AI-generated imagery and video supplied the material, with human decisions shaping character, performance, framing and continuity. The work was in making those choices belong together across a film, including the quiet moments between the more obvious story beats.

The kitchen places the metronome close to the viewer, making practice part of the room’s visual pressure.

## Sound follows Aoi out of the room

The metronome becomes more than a practice aid. The bus sequence carries its rhythm into an everyday journey, connecting the interior pressure Aoi feels with the world around her. The indicator offers an ordinary source for a sound that has already become personal.

That shift is part of how RUBATO builds a point of view. Sound can place us beside a character, then bring us closer to what she is experiencing. It gives a familiar image a different emotional weight without needing another line of dialogue.

The bus indicator connects an everyday journey to the rhythm following Aoi.

## From generated takes to a finished film

Selected generations were assembled, graded and finished in DaVinci Resolve. Image continuity, restrained performances and layered sound design shaped the final result. The creative work extends beyond choosing an attractive frame: a take has to support the moment before it and the one that follows.

RUBATO is part of the work behind XANTRANS: using AI tools to make characters, places and stories that feel connected. For screening enquiries or a conversation about building a film or creative world together, contact Toms at toms@zarans.com.
